growing up con
Kenzi grew up in a family of con artists and thieves. While she learned a lot from them, she wasn't really a fan of some of her family. Namely, Kenzi suffered abuse at the hands of her stepfather and neglect from mother. Thus she moved out and lived on the streets at a fairly early age. Kenzi has seen more of the world and it's hard realities than most people twice her age. It taught her how to survive, to be scrappy and resourceful. It also helped her to open her mind to the crazier side of life.

Meeting Bo Dennis is the most important and defining thing that's ever happened to Kenzi. It changed her life. She found a family in Bo and her merry band of Fae. She found someone she could call her sister and best friend, someone she could trust with her life and she found a purpose for her life that was pretty aimless. It was to help Bo, to be Bo's heart and sidekick and that exactly what she needs: someone whom she can always depend on.

There is next to nothing they wouldn't do for each other. In return, Kenzi grounds Bo, helps Bo find a home in world that she has been running from since she was a teenager. In turn, Kenzi finally has somebody that is a solid influence on her, somebody who makes her feel like she has a real family and despite the danger, she is constantly in just by association.

She proves herself helpful in her own human way and in the end, proves that even if she's technically the weakest of their group, she's got value and can be, surprisingly, the moral compass.

While she is the very definition of a sidekick, Kenzi is also kind of the brains in her partnership with Bo when they go to solve Fae-related mysteries and crimes, helping to keep Bo grounded and somewhat organized on the cases they choose. Bo repeatedly speaks to how Kenzi is her heart, even later on it's part of a prophecy.

But she's also forged friendships with other Fae. Next to Bo, Dyson is probably one of the most important people in her new Fae-filled life. She comes to trust and depend on him almost as much as she does Bo, she roots for him and his happiness and many times, they save one another from death or some serious maiming. She cares about him enough to risk her life several times to help him and he does the same. It starts as begrudging respect and turns into a, I dare say, love for each other( even if it's a lesser form of the love Kenzi shares with Bo). She also forges a strong bond with Hale, Dyson's partner, and BFF, based on being the sidekicks to their BFFs. Both help each other out in a jam and when Kenzi screws up, Hale is her go-to man and as someone who can understand her frustration with Bo and Dyson's relationship. There are others that she grows close to like Trick, Lauren, Vex and eventually Tamsin, all of whom she also comes to think of as her own make-shift family.

Throughout the show, Kenzi struggles with feeling weak and sometimes left out due to being human, something that has compounded over time but appears to escalate after their battle with The Garuda. But in season three, after Kenzi attacks The Norn to return Dyson's love to him, a liquid that spills on her arm. It turns out to be the essence a kitsune, an unstable trickster fae who ends up kidnapping her and then impersonating her. But not before Kenzi develops a rash on her arm where the liquid spilled.

At first, she hits the rash, however, when Kenzi tries to tell her friends about it, she’s cast aside and dismissed for "more important" matters. Her friends’ carelessness leads to her being kidnapped by the kitsune and despite being ignored by her friends, Kenzi never loses faith in her friends, believing all along that they will realize that the kitsune is not actually her and rescue her (and they do).

But the important thing that comes from these events is not her rewarded unwavering faith despite seeming to be let down. Instead, it is Kenzi's renewed determination to stop being the weakest link in the group, to stop being a liability. Because she's VERY aware that she has only her scrappy nature and wits to help out in a fight. And while her friends might think that’s an asset, she doesn’t agree anymore. She feels that everyone around her treats her as a liability. She wants to have more, to do more. This brings about a growing desire to have fae powers and to be less of a ‘burden’ on her friends, which will eventually lead her down a perilous and costly road.
